Developed by a coalition of corporations of the DVD+RW Alliance which includes Philips, Sony, HP, Verbatim and many others, the DVD+R format has advanced editing and operational capabilities and is a competiting format to the DVD-R format. Since the double layer technology could be used with a DVD+R disc, the DVD+R DL has a capacity of 8.5GB, nearly doubling the capacity of a regular single layer DVD-R and DVD+R. With a DVD+R capable player, you can take advantage of the DVD+R double layer technology, in which you can read 8.5 GB on a single side DVD+R DL disc. Burning a DVD+R DL disc, however, requires a DVD+R DL media compatible burner.
