What is HDMI?
High-Definition Multimedia Interface or commonly known as, HDMI, is a new standard interface for any compatible digital audio/video source, like DVD player, PC, video game system, and compatible digital audio system, etc. It supports all-digital audio/video uncompressed streams and Digital Rights Management technology. The HDMI Founders comprised the technology from Hitachi, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Royal Philips Electronics, Silicon Image, Sony Corporation, Thomson and Toshiba Corporation for a higher entertainment quality in video and audio, and less cable maze behind your entertainment system. It is a modern replacement for the older analogue standards such as SCART or the RCA connector.
HDMI integrates the audio and video signal in a cable. Its version number (1.0 or 1.1, etc) represents the specifications required for different machines. For example, when the HDIM standard was just released, the maximum pixel rate was 165Mpixels/second, it is sufficient for 1080p at 60Hz or WUXGA definition, but was later followed by HDMI 1.3 which increased to 340Mpixels/second. This flexibility of specification will make it possible to support the higher level entertainment instruction in the future.
The HDMI Cables now follow the standard named: Type A (19 connector pins) and Type B (29 connector pins). The higher numbers in pin supports the carrying of more video channel or signal to support the displays quality in future. Type A HDMI cable is backward-compatible with DVI interface used on modern personal computer. This means if we use a suitable adapter or cable, a DVI source can drive an HDMI monitor.
